Balenciaga has been mocked over its new £2,890 hi-vis 'construction worker' jacket.

The Spanish design house, which is known for its over-the-top creations, unveiled the padded parka as part of its autumn/winter 21 collection.

Shoppers were quick to ridicule the piece on social media, saying it looks like a 'parking attendant's uniform' or 'something Bob the Builder' would wear.

FarFetch has been mocked across social media after shoppers spotted a neon yellow jacket by Balenciaga being sold for £2,890 (pictured)

FarFetch describes the reversible Balenciaga jacket (pictured) as 'practical', while noting that it a concealed hood and multiple pockets

The description on online retailer FarFetch reads: 'For AW21, Balenciaga staged a dystopian collection, where the looks represented a sort of armour for everyday life.

'In a neon yellow hue, this padded parka coat is defined by the practical reversible design and the padded silhouette. The look is finished with a logo print at the chest and rear.'

Made entirely from polyester, the Balenciaga jacket is neon yellow on one side and black on the other, while also having the brand's logo visible.

It is currently only available in size XS and S.

Social media users poked fun at the design, with one posting: 'My dad had this jacket when he was a construction worker.'

A flood of Instagram users have compared the jacket to hi-vis apparel worn by construction workers

A second added: 'When you got Fashion Week at 3 but tarmacking the M6 at 7'

One shopper wrote: 'They just trying to scope out the idiots by selling this'

Another said: 'Stop it, this has to be made up'

Demna Gvasalia who gained a Masters' Degree in Fashion Design from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium, has been the artistic Director of Balenciaga’s collections since 2015.

A year earlier he had launched his own much-loved luxury fashion brand Vetements.

Other social media users have made jokes about the jacket being sold on a site called 'Far Fetch'

He announced the reintroduction of Balenciaga Haute couture in January 2020, saying the brand is getting back to 'its sources of origin'.

The viral post mocking Balenciaga's jacket comes just weeks after the brand raised eyebrows for selling a £1,350 knitted hoodie covered in holes.

Despite the Spanish brand having a legion of celebrity fans, shoppers took to Twitter to dub their designs an 'abomination' and said the hoodie looks like the owner has 'lost a fight with a Staffy'.

One person said: 'Mental huh, wouldn't buy it even if I could afford it.'

Another added: 'Who even comes up with these prices never mind the design.'

Farfetch, which sells the jumper in the UK , writes in the description: 'Balenciaga has never been afraid to push the boundaries as far as design is concerned.
